Abstract

Interdisciplinary research has emerged as a critical driver for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in emerging economies where development challenges are complex and interconnected. This article examines how the integration of multiple academic disciplines—such as environmental science, economics, public health, engineering, and social sciences—enhances the design and implementation of sustainable development strategies. Evidence suggests that fragmented disciplinary approaches are insufficient for addressing systemic issues like poverty, climate change, inequality, and weak institutional governance. Interdisciplinary collaboration enables knowledge integration, improves policy coherence, and strengthens innovation capacity in resource-constrained settings. In emerging economies, such collaboration also enhances technology transfer, supports inclusive growth, and promotes evidence-based policymaking. The study highlights that SDG progress depends not only on scientific advancement but also on institutional coordination and cross-sectoral engagement. Ultimately, interdisciplinary research provides a foundation for transformative pathways toward sustainable and equitable development.
